Throughout Makeba's life, the reaction of others to her light skin and plentiful body has made her feel invisible sometimes, and much too visible at other times. Once Makeba's father retires from the military, the family moves to Los Angeles. There, Makeba meets Jemonte, an intelligent and handsome Afrocentric young man who takes her on a political journey that changes her life forever.
